The new European regulation on organic production, which will apply from January 1, 2021, incorporates a number of new features such as the expansion of the scope and consideration of bonus for internal controls by operators.
The Regulation extends the range of organic products that can be produced, prepared, labeled, distributed, marketed, imported or exported from the Union. These new products are, among others:
- Yeast intended for human or animal consumption.
- Yerba mate, sweet corn, palm hearts, hop shoots, vine leaves and other similar edible parts of plants and products obtained therefrom.
- Sea salt and other salts for food and feed.
- Natural gums and resins.
- Beeswax.
- Essential oils.
- Traditional plant-based vegetable preparations.
In the previous Regulation (EU) 834/2007, yeast was not considered as an agricultural ingredient and therefore was not included among the agricultural components of organic products. However, R 889/2008 (*) introduced the obligation to consider yeast and yeast products as ingredients of agricultural origin for the purposes of organic production. Consequently, from 1 January 2021, only organically produced substrates must be used in the production of organic yeast for use as food or feed.
