What do consumers look for in a healthy snack?

SUGAR REDUCTION

In the world of healthy snacks, sugar-free options are gaining more and more prominence. In Europe, 25% of snack bar consumers avoid snacking on a regular basis due to their high sugar content. On the other hand, in the UK, 32% of consumers cite the "Low/Reduced Sugar" claim as the most important factor when choosing a snack bar.

NATURAL INGREDIENTS

During 2023, the snacks sector experienced a remarkable rebound, leaving behind the decline that had marked the post-pandemic period. During this period, a total of 5848 products were launched on the market, 20% of which were made with Natural Ingredients, 8% more than the previous year, exceeding the overall growth rate of the sector.

ALTERNATIVE PROTEINS

It is predicted that by 2027, 75% of protein demand will be of plant origin, with an expected annual growth of 11% for products incorporating them. On the other hand, in Spain, investments in sustainable proteins increased by 58% between 2021 and 2022, indicating a clear focus by companies on innovation in alternative proteins.

Plant-based snack with healthy claims

Vegan and plant-based claims experienced a significant increase in snack bar launches between August 2019 and July 2023. Snack launches with "vegan" or "no animal ingredients" claims increased from 27% to 37%.

These products also tend to highlight messages such as gluten-free, non-GMO and organic.
