The ProSweets trade show once again brought together the leading suppliers in the confectionery and snack industry in Cologne. Held from January 28 to 31, this international event has established itself as a meeting place to discover the latest innovations, trends, and technologies that will shape the future of the industry.
At TRADES, we had the opportunity to visit the ProSweets trade show alongside two of the companies we represent, Paradise Fruits and Curt Georgi. During the event, we explored the latest market trends. We also strengthened our relationships with strategic partners and exchanged knowledge and experiences with professionals from around the world.
3 Key Trends from the ProSweets 2024 Trade Show
SUSTAINABILITY TAKES CENTER STAGE AT THE PROSWEETS TRADE SHOW
Sustainability continues to gain prominence across all segments of the industry and was one of the main themes at the ProSweets trade show. Solutions with a lower environmental impact were presented during the conference program and guided tours. From the sourcing of ingredients and raw materials to production and packaging processes, sustainability was evident throughout the entire value chain.
NOVEL INGREDIENTS
Emerging ingredients are enabling the development of more natural and sustainable sweets and snacks. A good example is reformulated chocolate recipes, which contain up to 80% more cocoa while cutting their sugar content in half.
This trend also encompasses other innovations. Notable examples include natural colorants, sugar substitutes, and low-glycemic-index fibers. Other products are also gaining prominence, such as low-sugar gummies, the use of inulin, and solutions containing calcium carbonate encapsulated with rice protein.
FUNCTIONAL AND CREATIVE PRODUCTS
- Sweets
Candy producers are responding with new references or reformulations that are healthier, innovative and creative. For example, they are betting on unusual combinations such as fruit chewing gums with vitamin C and zinc, or organic cookies to help teething toddlers.
On the other hand, upcycling and the reuse of raw materials are making their way into this trend in different ways, as is the case of the complete use of cocoa fruit in a single product, instead of using beans.
- Snacks and nuts
This category is dominated by clean-label products and items free of additives and preservatives. There is also growing demand for snacks that are low in fat, sodium, or carbohydrates, as well as products with functional benefits.
Plant-based products continue to grow in popularity. We're finding more and more options, such as plant-based bars with parsnip chips or made with jackfruit.
- Bakery and frozen dough
In the bakery industry, two major drivers of innovation stand out: convenience and indulgence. One of the most significant trends is "Fresh on Demand," which responds to consumers' interest in baking products at home.
The use of alternative, healthier sources of fat and the incorporation of new flavors into sourdough preparations are also gaining importance.
CURT GEORGI AND PARADISE FRUITS AT THE PROSWEETS TRADE SHOW
Our sales director, Carlos Soguero, visited the ProSweets trade show alongside two of the companies we represent, which had their own booths at the event.
PARADISE FRUITS
Our partner specializing in freeze-dried fruits presented its Crunch and Drops product lines, made from fruit puree. These products can be enriched with minerals or collagen and are designed for applications such as snacks, chocolate coatings, and other innovative formulations.
CURT GEORGI
Another of our representatives who attended the fair was Curt Georgi, the flavor house with more tradition and experience. Specializing in the confectionery sector, it offers a wide variety of flavor ranges ideal for this sector and responds to both the healthiest trends and the search for sensory and indulgent experiences.
